Community Service Initiatives
NAD's approach to their shopping centre developments is interwoven with their aim to benefit and empower previously disadvantaged communities, particularly in rural areas. Their retail developments stimulate economic growth and result in nodes which become the heartbeat of a community. They encourage local job creation and social activities, enhance a sense of belonging and pride, and restore dignity and hope.
"We strongly advise our tenants to employ people from the community," says CEO Japie van Niekerk. "Ultimately, our developments should not only increase the quality of living and service levels in the area, but also nurture an environment that is conducive to growth and future development."
CSI Highlights
Thusano Community Centre (Hammanskraal)
The Thusano Community Centre in Hammanskraal was established in 2006 and provides a place of safety for more than 200 disadvantaged and abused pre-school children. In association with its Jubilee Mall development, NAD upgraded the centre’s facilities to provide the young children with a safe and secure home away from home. Jubilee Mall also then adopted the Thusano Community Centre and this relationship has facilitated more than a million Rand’s in upgrades, which has included the building of new classrooms, toilet facilities and an enhanced playground area.
Community RADIO STATIONS
As part of New Africa Developments’ ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives they have constructed three radio studios over the past year as part of the mall environment. Mams Mall is home to Mams FM, Dwarsloop Mall to Bushbuckridge Radio and Acornhoek Mall to RFM. Not only have the individual radio stations benefited from state of the art, prominent radio studios intended to increase the public profile of these radio stations, but NAD has also contributed to the supply of equipment to improve broadcast capabilities and performance. This has ranged from the provision of a complete fully equipped studio to the upgrading of a radio station’s transmitter in order for its broadcasts to reach more listeners from the surrounding community.
